Action Alert: Last Push to Pass ESSB 5203 This Session!

Action Alert: Last Push to Pass ESSB 5203 This Session!

Conservation Northwest / Feb 28, 2026 /

The Wildlife Crossings bill is headed to the House floor- tell your Representatives to vote YES!!

We need your voice NOW to ensure this important public‑safety and conservation bill moves forward.

ESSB 5203 advances Washington’s Habitat Connectivity Action Plan, helping the state prioritize wildlife crossings, reduce dangerous wildlife–vehicle conflicts, and protect critical movement corridors.

This bill is built on proven results. Wildlife crossings on I-90 and U.S. 97 have reduced collisions by up to 90%, improving driver safety and saving taxpayer dollars. Statewide, deer and elk collisions cost Washington residents over $74 million each year in medical bills, vehicle damage, and emergency response.

The Senate has passed ESSB 5203. The House Transportation Committee has passed ESSB 5203. Now the bill must pass through the Rules Committee before it can be eligible for a floor vote

Why This Bill Matters:

  • Protecting habitat connectivity: Roads fragment habitat and interrupt seasonal movement, threatening herd health and resilience.
  • Reducing collisions: Every collision is a loss of life, costly to drivers, and a strain on emergency resources.
  • Leveraging proven solutions: Wildlife crossings are having greatest impact- using proven methods that already work on I-90 and U.S. 97.
  • Strengthening collaboration: ESSB 5203 ensures WDFW and WSDOT coordinate effectively, aligning agency efforts to maximize results.

ESSB 5203 has cleared the Senate and the House Transportation Committee

Final Push: Tell all Representatives to vote YES in the coming floor vote!

Every message is critical to protect wildlife, improve public safety, and maintain critical habitat connectivity

Dear Representative,

I’m writing as your constituent to ask for your support in advancing ESSB 5203, the wildlife safe-passages bill, through its final steps in the House.

Wildlife–vehicle collisions are a serious and preventable public safety issue. Deer and elk collisions alone cost Washington residents more than $74 million annually in medical expenses, vehicle repairs, emergency response, and lost productivity. Reducing these collisions protects drivers while delivering real savings to families and communities.

We know these investments work. Wildlife crossings along I-90 and U.S. 97 have reduced collisions by up to 90%, safeguarding motorists and maintaining critical habitat connectivity. ESSB 5203 builds on that proven success by advancing Washington’s Habitat Connectivity Action Plan and strengthening coordination between WSDOT and WDFW to prioritize projects where they will have the greatest safety and ecological benefit. As climate change shifts wildlife movement patterns, maintaining connected landscapes is increasingly important for both public safety and long-term resilience.

ESSB 5203 has already passed the Senate floor, and cleared the House Transportation and Rules Committees. I respectfully urge you to vote YES in the upcoming House floor vote.

Thank you for your service and for your attention to this important issue.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
