“Time for the Grizzly?” Film Screening and Panel Discussion

The Friends of the North Cascades Grizzly Bear is proud to present a free event celebrating the iconic grizzly bear!

Join us on March 8, 2017 for a film screening of “Time for the Grizzly?” by bear expert and acclaimed filmmaker Chris Morgan, followed by a panel discussion.

The evening will begin with an overview and Q&A about recovering the grizzly bear to Washington’s North Cascades Ecosystem. Jack Oelfke, Chief of the Natural and Cultural Resources at the North Cascades National Park Service will discuss the public process undertaken by government agencies, as well as describe potential options under consideration to restore the grizzly population.

We’ll then view Chris Morgan’s brand new short film “Time for the Grizzly?”, which follows the story of grizzly bear recovery in Montana’s Cabinet Mountains.

The evening will end with a conversation and Q&A about how to bring the recovery process to Washington’s North Cascades Ecosystem. Panelists include Chris Morgan and Bill Gaines, wildlife ecologist and executive director of Washington Conservation Science Institute. Together, they will discuss how grizzly recovery work is succeeding in other parts of the region.

Opportunities for you to support grizzly recovery, or to provide feedback on the recovery plan, will be available throughout the evening.

Event will take place at the zoo’s Education Center, located off the adjacent Hippo parking lot (enter lot at the south side of zoo at Fremont Avenue N. and N. 50th Street). Parking is free for this event.

Doors open at 6:30pm with light snacks. Presentations begin at 7:15pm.

After decades of research, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies have released proposals to support recovery of the grizzly bear to the North Cascades. This is welcome news, and a historic conservation opportunity.

Drawing on science and community involvement, these agencies recently released a draft Environmental Impact Statement detailing four alternatives regarding grizzly recovery. A 60-day public comment period is now underway.

The Friends of the North Cascades Grizzly Bear coalition is a group of conservation organizations, individuals, businesses, and other supporting entities advocating for the restoration of a healthy population of grizzly bears to the North Cascades.
