Two-hundred feet off the ground, atop a Douglas fir, sat a man looking out over an expansive old-growth forest. He took in the natural beauty surrounding him, and wondered if his children’s children would have the opportunity to experience this breathtaking landscape, just as he was.

In 1989, Mitch Friedman founded the Greater Ecosystem Alliance in Bellingham.

It was 1988, and he was one of the environmental movement’s “tree sitters” fighting to save wildlife and their habitat. But he saw the need for more—he wanted to connect diverse voices and work pragmatically for a wild Northwest.

That man was Mitch Friedman, and a year later in  1989, he took this “pragmatic idealism” and founded Conservation Northwest—at that time known as the Greater Ecosystem Alliance—in Bellingham. Since then, we have lead countless successes for local wildlands and wildlife. Today, Mitch continues to lead Conservation Northwest with a bold and innovative vision.
