As visitation grows across Washington’s public lands, trails, roads, and recreation infrastructure increasingly overlap with the last remaining high value habitats. Without careful planning, new access points, ebike expansions, and concentrated use can fragment ecosystems, degrade riparian areas, and erode the resilience wildlife depend on. Our work evaluates recreation proposals through a habitat lens, engages agencies and recreation groups early, and advocates for policies that steer use away from sensitive areas. By combining scientific review with grassroots advocacy and longstanding partnerships, we help ensure that recreation development maintains Washington’s ecological integrity. This approach keeps habitats connected, reduces cumulative impacts, and supports sustainable recreation for the long term.

Recreation Infrastructure

We assess how expanding recreation infrastructure — including roads, trails, motorized routes, and backcountry access — affects habitat quality across Washington’s public lands.

By reviewing scientific literature and conducting spatial analyses, we help identify thresholds where recreation pressure becomes unsustainable and pinpoint landscapes where habitat fragmentation, vegetation loss, or watershed impacts are most acute. These insights guide our engagement on recreation proposals and land use planning processes, ensuring that habitat considerations remain central as agencies and partners evaluate new or expanded recreation opportunities.

We also work with Tribes and conservation partners to understand how recreation affects culturally important landscapes and the ecological processes they support.

Habitat Restoration

To address habitat impacts, we partner with coalitions, recreation organizations, and community groups to promote sustainable recreation practices and support restoration where habitat has been degraded.

Our outreach efforts bring education materials, curriculum, and best practice guidance into existing recreation learning spaces, helping users understand how their choices influence soil stability, vegetation, meadows, grasslands, and sensitive watersheds. Through policy development and collaborative advocacy, we work to prioritize areas where recreation can be encouraged and areas where protections or alternative activities are more appropriate. This approach helps maintain healthy habitats while supporting equitable, sustainable access to Washington’s public lands.

A History of Habitat Impact from Recreation

Recreation in Washington’s public lands has steadily increased, placing greater pressure on sensitive habitats through trails, infrastructure, and concentrated use. Over time, research and field observations have revealed key soil, vegetation, and watershed impacts, improving understanding of recreation’s ecological effects and informing more sustainable management approaches.

Trail use and concentrated recreation lead to soil compaction and erosion.

Hiking, biking, and offroad vehicles compress soil, reducing infiltration and water retention. On steep or sensitive slopes, this accelerates erosion, degrades riparian areas, and alters stream sedimentation patterns, impacting both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. In some heavily used trail systems, compaction can persist for years, reducing native plant regeneration.

Recreation infrastructure fragments and alters native vegetation.

Campgrounds, parking areas, ski runs, and mountain biking trails remove or degrade native vegetation. Repeated use creates “social trails” and informal paths, which expand habitat loss beyond the designed recreation footprint and can disrupt sensitive plant communities, including rare alpine and riparian species.

Recreation increases spread of invasive species.

Foot traffic, bikes, horses, and boats can transport seeds of invasive plants, such as knotweed or cheatgrass, into high-quality habitats. This not only replaces native flora but also alters soil chemistry, fire regimes, and the structure of forests, meadows, and riparian zones, affecting habitat quality for wildlife.

Cumulative pressure from high-use areas can degrade sensitive ecosystems.

In Washington, popular wilderness areas in the Cascades, Olympics, and northeast forests experience repeated disturbance, especially during summer and winter recreation seasons. Alpine meadows, riparian zones, and subalpine wetlands are particularly vulnerable, with recovery from trampling often taking decades.
