Our Approach

Since 2001, our Community Wildlife Monitoring Program has advanced wildlife data collection and collaborative stewardship through a network of dedicated volunteers.

The Cascades hold some of Washington’s most important wildlife habitat, but much of it is remote, rugged, and difficult for agencies to monitor consistently. Our wildlife monitoring in the North Cascades uses trained volunteers and remote cameras to detect species presence, track movement patterns, and identify how animals use these high value landscapes. By partnering with Wilderness Awareness School and working alongside state, federal, tribal, and independent biologists, we generate reliable data that supports recovery planning and habitat connectivity efforts.

This information helps shape where conservation investments are most needed and ensures decisions are grounded in real conditions on the ground. Through this work, we strengthen the scientific foundation behind long term wildlife stewardship in the Cascades.

Moist Forests

Our teams have deployed remote cameras and conducted winter snow‑tracking surveys in collaboration with WDFW, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other partners.

An Advisory Council of agency biologists and professional researchers helps guide our annual monitoring objectives and site selection, ensuring our work complements and strengthens ongoing wildlife recovery efforts.

Volunteers play a central role, providing on‑the‑ground observations that help refine site locations and interpret field conditions throughout the season.

Regional Collaboration

Our monitoring spans remote landscapes from the North Cascades to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, generating data that informs conservation decisions for species including grizzly bears, wolverines, wolves, fishers, and Canada lynx.

 In the Central Cascades, we partner with Wilderness Awareness School to conduct winter tracking and year‑round camera monitoring near new wildlife crossings along I‑90. In northeast Washington and southern British Columbia, we collaborate with B.C. Parks and the Skagit Environmental Endowment Commission to support a cross‑border monitoring program modeled in part after our own.

Across all these regions, we provide coordination, training, and scientific rigor that allow volunteers and partners to contribute to high‑value wildlife research at a landscape scale.

Impact & Results

A History of of Cascade Carnivores

Our volunteer-operated wildlife cameras document iconic carnivores across the Cascades where state and federal agencies do not have the resources to go. Decades of growth have allowed us to become one of the largest community-science wildlife efforts of its kind in North America, working to extend and enhance the scientific research capacity of our organization and colleagues.

Cascades Carnivore Monitoring Program

Woodland Park Zoo and Washington State University biologists launched a long term, year round remote camera effort to monitor wolverines, Canada lynx, and other at risk carnivores across the Cascades. Conservation Northwest is a core collaborator, contributing camera grid data that—based on preliminary 2025 results—continues to detect lynx, wolverines, gray wolves, Pacific fishers, Cascade red fox, and other carnivores of conservation concern.

Cascades Carnivore Project collaboration

Conservation Northwest partners with this research organization to share data from the CWMP camera network, strengthening high quality carnivore science across the range. This collaboration depends on coordinated work among local, state, and federal agencies, universities, nonprofits, and community volunteers, enabling research that would not be possible without broad, cross institutional support.

Long term community science monitoring

Now in its 14th year, the Community Wildlife Monitoring Program has become one of North America’s largest community science wildlife monitoring efforts. Its design has informed similar programs, and its success is rooted in committed volunteers who generate meaningful, long term data on wildlife presence and distribution throughout the region.
