Wolves in the Methow?

Jul 01, 2008

It might be wolves captured on camera near the Methow valley. The possible return of wolves to the Cascades is great news.

This is the image of a possible wolf taken in the Methow by remote camera in June of 2008.Recently, several photographs have been taken of what appear to be wolves near Twisp in the Methow Valley in north-central Washington. One of the images was snapped by a Conservation Northwest remote camera.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is still working to confirm these canids using fur and other DNA samples, and use "howling" to help determine if there are pups.

Conservation Northwest will be continue to monitor and track the animals throughout the summer through our wildlife monitoring program.

The possible return of wolves to the Cascades is great news. They are an important part of the Cascades ecosystem that have been missing for far too long. Conservation Northwest is working with scientists, state and federal agencies, ranchers, hunters, and others to develop a balanced management plan for wolves. With the proper management tools, wolves and people can coexist in peace, and impacts to ranchers and hunters can be minimized.
