Evidence mounts that the Obama Administration must withdraw the Bush Oregon logging plan
Rebuffing the anti-science stance of the Bush administration, the US Fish and Wildlife Service today released a report finding that continued protection of marbled murrelets in Washington, Oregon, and California is required. This report replaces a 2004 review where Bush political appointees reversed scientific and legal conclusions to try to eliminate protections for murrelets. The new report finds that the tri-state murrelet population is distinct and separate from other populations in Canada and Alaska.

Decision is a result of national and local campaign to Obama Administration
Local conservation and recreation groups applauded the Obama administration's call today for a one-year moratorium on road-building and development on millions of acres of national forest roadless areas. Efforts in Washington State have been at the forefront of a national campaign urging the Obama administration to uphold the previous Roadless Rule, and diverse voices of support (including hunters and fishermen, elected officials, tribal leaders, and religious leaders) were heard across the state.

Compensation and deterrents help find a balance
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating whether wolves in Washington have killed a cow southwest of Twisp. It is possible that the cow might have died by other means and been scavenged by the wolves. "If wildlife experts confirm that individual wolves from the Lookout Pack were responsible for taking down a cow, we will push for swift and fair compensation to the rancher," said Jay Kehne, Okanogan outreach organizer for Conservation Northwest, who lives in Omak.

Conservation Northwest calls for immediate arrest and full prosecution
A search warrant obtained from the Okanogan County District Court reveals that two residents of Twisp are suspected of illegally trapping and shooting two endangered gray wolves and attempting to send a wolf pelt to Canada. One of the killed wolves was confirmed to be a member of Washington's newly discovered Lookout Pack, likely one of the pups.

The Seattle Times
Craig Welch of the Seattle Times reports on the coexistence of wolves and ranchers in the Methow. "Ranchers have been part of this community for generations, and a lot of them have been really great stewards," said Jay Kehne, with the environmental group Conservation Northwest. "When a wolf moves in, of course there's more concern. But just because there's a wolf pack in an area doesn't mean you can't ranch."

Missoula News
Matthew Frank of the Missoula News reports on a lawsuit filed to help protect lynx from the effects of climate change. "This is the first lawsuit that I know of that says when [FWS] designates critical habitat, they need to take into account the future of that habitat as it relates to global warming," say Sierra Club attorney Eric Huber.

The Spokesman Review
Becky Kramer of the Spokane Spokesman Review reports that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has agreed to study whether the alpine habitat for endangered US mountain caribou needs stronger protections.
