As a member of Washington’s Wolf Advisory Group (WAG), and an active participant in the collaborative process to update our state’s Protocol for Wolf-Livestock Interactions, Conservation Northwest supports the updated protocol released by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) on June 1, 2017.

The ranchers that operate on this and nearby allotments receive funding and other resources through our Range Rider Pilot Project. They have been doing everything possible to avoid conflicts with wolves and other predators.

Cow depredation confirmed within territory of Teanaway wolves

The cow belonged to one of seven Washington ranchers currently partnering with Conservation Northwest to implement “range riders”, herd supervisors that help deter depredations as the region’s wolf population recovers and their territory overlaps with public forest land now used in part for livestock grazing.

The Spokesman-Review on Sunday ran a feature article telling the story of Conservation Northwest's budding range rider program. This last season, 2013, Conservation Northwest expanded the program to sponsor range riders for three ranch families in Washington.
